But yeah, Pestilence isn't actually supposed to be part of the group, he was added in the aftermath of the black plague, both to represent the devastation of plague and to correct the perceived overlap between the roles of the white and red horse. (You have to admit, war/victory/conquest/strife does seem a bit redundant). Still could be worse. I've seen them broken down as Victory/Strife/Famine/Plague (with the pale horse, who as you pointed out is the only one actually named, being plague) and darksiders changes famine to Fury (so they have War/Strife/Fury/Death, which is even more redundant)
That said I personally like the modern depiction, innacurate to history as it may be. And I like this pic, very clever and well drawn.
